Cheyenne Wilderness Retreat Australia
Perched on the edge of the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, this is a unique part of Australia, wild, rugged...magic ... and safe for all the family.Cheyenne, is a working 2000 acre sheep and cattle property nestled among the hills and gorges of the magnificent National Park and Wilderness Area. The Oxley Wild Rivers National Park is World Heritage listed and features many rare and endangered species including the beautiful Brush Tailed Rock Wallaby. A large colony of these delightful little creatures can be seen almost every night when they come from the wild to be fed outside the cottage.
Your holiday starts the minute you arrive, you can relax in the peaceful garden setting or settle in a hammock in the gazebo right on the edge of the gorge. You might like to warm up with an easy walk over the lovely cleared farmland.
Naturally, you are always welcome to help or watch Burgh and Sue with their farmwork. See sheep dogs at work herding sheep, or try your hand at milking a cow. If you wish Burgh can even show you how to shear a sheep.
The bushwalking includes walks suitable for all levels including a spectacular 15 kilometre (9.5 miles) walk down into the river valley 500 metres (over 1500 feet) below. There is usually plenty of wildlife and some very unique Australian flora. For bird watchers, Cheyenne offers a special treat.
You stay in a 'cosy' self-contained cottage, with a sitting room complete with the warmth of a slow combustion wood heater, and the three bedrooms can sleep a family comfortably (cot available).
If you are looking for a real holiday Sue is happy to prepare one or all of your meals. And for something special, why not ask Burgh to take you out to his campfire on the edge of the gorge where he will prepare a unique camp oven dinner.
Children love their stay at Cheyenne. Friendly farm animals; cows, pigs, chickens, and there is nearly always a baby animal of some sort to cuddle.
Burgh also has a fine collection of antique machinery and he is always happy to demonstrate the old engines and tractors working.

The cabins offer rustic accommodation in the heart of New England's adventure wilderness. Once quarters for the old Point Lookout timber mill, the remaining cabins reflect some of the history of the rugged timbered ranges. Nestled beside the hurrying headwaters of the Little Styx River, the cabins are an ideal base from which to fish and walk the remote gorges or Tablelands forests.
Little Styx River Cabins can each sleep up to ten visitors in comfort. Hot showers and wood heating provide for a comfortable, and relaxed stay in some of Australia's most picturesque high country.
Please Note - The Cabins have pit toilets and no electricity - lighting is via gas lamps. Although the cabins are clean and warm, they may not be suitable for those who do not enjoy roughing it a little.
Fishing :
The Styx River, although only small, was once described as Australia's most picturesque trout stream. It plunges through remote canyons, shaded by towering snow gums. The cabins provide an excellent base from which to search the wilder gorges for the elusive trout, characterised by their fighting qualities and size. Guided fishing trips can be readily organised for visitors to the cabins.
Walking Tracks :
Situated only a kilometre south of New England National Park, the cabins are handy to over twenty kilometres of graded walking tracks through splendid rainforest and sweeping vistas of the eastern escarpment.
Other Activities Available :
Within an hour's drive of five magnificent National Parks, handy to the L.P. Dutton Trout Hatchery and hundreds of square kilometres of remote State Forests, you can be assured of enjoying many natural attractions.
Each cabin contains a collection of track notes, a guide to fishing and recommended 4WD trips for clients to pursue at leisure.
The nearby towns of Dorrigo and Bellingen make for a lovely day trip, where visitors can enjoy the English-like landscape of Dorrigo and browse through the many art and craft shops in Bellingen.
Things to Bring :
Situated at nearly 5,000 feet above sea level, the cabins can be subject to all the variances of mountain weather. Consequently visitors should be sure to pack adequate warm clothing and wet weather gear. During winter months ensure that anti-freeze is added to car radiators.
Wood stoves and small gas burners are present in both cabins and many clients find fire-starters a useful item. Guests should also bring an axe. Similarly a strong torch will find plenty of use when visiting the 'loo or woodshed at night. We discourage the use of candles as a potential fire hazard.
Guests are required to bring their sleeping bags and pillows or linen, towels, tea towels, and their own gas lamps. An esky is advisable during warmer months.
