History of the Castle 1973 to Present Day....
In 1971 Marcia and Ian Hayne decided to build a Castle.
The Castle was to be mainly Norman Style, though with later additions it became medieval in style. In 1972 work was commenced and completed by February 1973 and The Castle, completed with Fairy Stories was opened in March 1973.
Two years later the Great Hall was completed with it's display of medieval armour. The amour comes from England, Germany, Spain and Italy. In 1978, The Great Tower building was erected in stages in conjunction with an expansion of the Souvenir Shop, and Tudor facade on the shop front. The 3rd of May, 1980, the new Tower Building was opened to the public.
In July 1984 Sandy MacKenzie and his wife Joan together with Kevin Tuckwell purchased The Castle. Work was started almost immediately to enclose and include the house alongside The Castle into the castle complex. The courtyard was enclosed and the downstairs area of the house used to introduce a tea room and increase the shop area. This was opened in time for Christmas 1984.
In September 1986 a private doll collection was purchased, this collection was displayed in a new dolls museum built for the purpose and opened to the public in December 1986. At the same time the tower block was first opened to the public. To open the tower a concrete cutter was lifted by crane to the top of the great tower and each floor was cut into blocks and lowered down through the tower to the ground floor, circular steps were then constructed to provide access to the panoramic views from 7 stories high of the surrounding country.
Looking for further displays to provide entertainment Sandy and Joan purchased items from the closing down auction of The Land of Legends at Tugun on the Gold Coast on the 27th of May 1995. In the next six months work mainly behind the scenes was carried out to provide 12 new displays to be opened to the public in December 1995. A further 5 displays will be opened progressively during 1996. The Castle has become a place where Medieval history in relation to The Way of Life, Costuming, Architecture, and the Implements of War can be studied and enjoyed. The planning and execution of the complex is probably unique in the Southern Hemisphere.
Life In The Castle
In the medieval castle, man had to organise his life to daylight hours because torches, candles and lamps were not very effective and were smokey and smelly. There was little furniture, a chair or two and trestle tables and benches. The Great Hall was the centre of castle life. The main event of the day was dinner, served at about 10am, after His Lordship had completed his business, such as receiving petitions, collecting rent, etc.
An Aquamanile (a water carrier) in the shape of some grotesque animal was brought in by pages. Dinner began with a Blessing, each pair of guests shared a wooden bowl and a goblet made of pewter, wood or horn. Earthenware plates were not used much before the 14th century. Supper, a lighter meal was served at sunset (followed by minstrels or other entertainment), and so to bed. Defences were checked and sentries were posted. The Lord slept on a bed, but the men of the castle slept on straw pallets on the floor of the Great Hall.
The head of the castle was of course the Baron, in his absence his wife ruled, the next most important person was the Steward or Seneschal. He was a noble and the overall general manager of the castle. Directly under the control were the Baliff and the Reeve who organised the outside work done by the peasants.
Since the Knight's business was fighting, he practised his trade in sport and in play. The life of noble children was like that of all children. They were loved by their parents, played with toys and were taught to read and write.
When the boys were 7 or 8 they were sent to another castle to learn social graces and begin their military training. Clothing was for some utilitarian and for others, a statement of their wealth and position. The Cleric wore a cassock and the Physician, a purple robe and red gloves. People loved jewellery and the signet ring was used to validate documents.
Storytime
Little Red Ridinghood
Once upon a time...
There was a little girl who always wore a red costume, so people called her Little Red Ridinghood. Her mother gave her a basket of goodies to take to her sick Grandmama, telling her to walk around the forest as a bad old wolf lived there. But flowers were blooming in the forest so she went in to pick some.A voice asked her where she was going. "I'm going to Grandmama's," she said. "The door is on the latch." "Is that so?" said the wolf, slipping off between the trees. Grandmama saw the wolf coming and hid in the wardrobe. He put on her bonnet and jumped into bed. In came Little Red Ridinghood.
"Grandmama, what big eyes you have!"
"All the better to see you with, my dear."
"Grandmama, what big nose you have."
"All the better to smell you with, my dear."
"Grandmama, what big teeth you have."
"All the the better to eat you with."
The wolf made a grab for Little Red Ridinghood but missed. Grandmama pulled her inside the wardrobe. A woodcutter working nearby heard their screams and killed the wolf.
Alice In Wonderland
Once upon a time...
Near the garden Alice saw a familiar grin on a tree. It was Cheshire cat. When the rest of him appeared Alice said politely, "Have you seen the white rabbit?", "No" said the Cheshire cat, "But if I were looking for him, I would ask the Mad Hatter." As Alice wandered on she saw two road signs pointing to the Mad Hatter and the March Hare.Alice followed the signs to a clearing in the woods, where she arrived at the Mad Hatters party. Everyone was there, The Mad Hatter, March Hare, of course the White Rabbit, Doremouse, Caterpillar and Twiddledee and Twiddledum.
Alice's Adventures In Wonderland, Written by Lewis Carroll published in 1865.
Hansel and Gretel
Once upon a time...
Two children, Hansel and Gretel, lived with their stepmother and father, a poor woodcutter. The stepmother persuaded the father to leave the children in the forest rather than let them starve at home. Hansel overheard this and when they were taken into the forest, he dropped pebbles to mark his way home.Next time he dropped breadcrumbs which the birds ate, and the children became lost. Tired and hungry, they came to a house made of sweets.
They were about to eat some when an old woman came out and said, "Don't eat my house but come inside and I will take care of you." The old woman was a witch who wanted to eat Hansel, so she put him in a cage to fatten up. When she asked to feel how plump his arm was, he fooled her by holding out a chicken bone.
One day, the witch could wait no longer. She ordered Gretel to have the oven hot. Gretel asked how she would know when it was hot enough. The witch opened the oven door - quickly Gretel pushed her in. Taking the witch's treasure, Hansel and Gretel set out for home where they found their stepmother had died. Reunited with their father, they lived happily ever after..
Pinocchio
Once upon a time...
Geppetto the woodcarver puts the finishing touches on pinocchio, his favorite new puppet."If only you were a real boy", Geppetto wishes. As the blue fairy brings the little puppet to life she tells him, "Prove yourself brave, truthful and unselfish, and someday you will be a real boy".
She turned to Jiminy Cricket and said, "You will be Pinocchio's conscience".
Aladdins Cave
Once upon a time...
Princess Jasmine found out that Aladdin was not dead but the evil Jafor was keeping him as the only person worthy to enter the cave of wonders.Disguised as a man Jafer took Aladdin to the cave of wonders. Aladdin and Abu his pet monkey, both gasped as they saw all the gold and jewels in the cavern.
Aladdin took the old lamp and tried to rub off the dust, POOF! in a flash of colour, swirling smoke a gigantic genie appeared.
The Old Woman in The Shoe
Once upon a time...
There was an old woman who lived in a shoe; She had so many children she didn't know what to do.
She gave then some broth without any bread;
Then whipped them all soundly and put them to bed.
In 1682, ELIZABETH FOSTER married ISAAC GOOSE in Boston USA. He had 10 children and they produced another 6. She was a great story teller, some tales she knew, others she made up. Possibly the "Old Woman In The Shoe" was one of these. A book of her stories was printed entitled " Songs For The Nursery" which may well be the Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes we know today, and she may well be Mother Goose.
Medieval Times
Armour
From the eleventh century armour was continually being developed. In the early thirteenth century, a conical helmet was used and a visor was added towards the end of the century. Chain mail was used extensively. At first it was open weave. Later on it was made much finer, and better fitting.
In the middle of the thirteenth century the fighting men began to improve their mail armour by adding pieces of metal to cover the knees and elbows. Breast plates were next and proved to be very good protection until the French fighting men realised they could stab their opponents in the armpits with their swords.
As armour became more protective it became heavier and more unweilding. The Knight in his full armour needed assistance to mount his steed. However, as time went by, with improved methods of making armour the Knight had more freedom of movement in his suit of armour.
With the improvement in guns and in military tactics, and the obvious disadvantage of heavy armour, it finally faded from the scene. The last time armour was used on a large scale was by the Duke of Marlborough in 1707.
Halberds...
Halberds or Poleaxes were developed from implements of agriculture used by the peasants. Of all the staff weapons which appeared in the Middle Ages, the Halberd was the most powerful and important. Against the Knight or Infantryman protected by his coat of mail, the serf used his workng tool.
The Halberd was used by Swiss Infantry to defeat the French Barons at the Battle of Morat, devastating their army.
Early in the fifteenth century, the blade spike and the pick were all being forged from a single piece of metal to create a true Halberd. The more decorative and ornate Halberds were used as parade weapons.
Minstrels...
At night time when the meal was over there could be some entertainment. If a group of minstrels or acrobats were passing by they would entertain the people living in the castle. Music played on several different instruments, or ballads sung by the minstrel, would make interesting entertainment for everyone. Trained animals could also play a part in the nights proceedings. To finish the evenings fun, there was dancing and games were played.
